As some of you already know, we, together with our supporter David G from the UK had the privilege to host 200 soldiers from the Hapak Machat 89 unit (commando unit) to a barbecue at their base. This reserve unit consists of former infantry and commando soldiers supporting special forces such as Maglan, Duvdevan & Egoz. They specialize in retrieving bodies from hostile areas, often under heavy fire. While their task is extremely difficult and mentally draining as they do not encounter the living, their unit does not receive the glory they deserve.
Most of the soldiers we met have been serving since the very beginning of the war with little breaks. Hosting soldiers to a barbecue does not provide them only with the protein they lack (the supply is complicated, and the soldiers usually receive only canned beans or tuna) but also with a sense of appreciation, belonging, and an opportunity to share.
This barbecue, which symbolically took place on Yom Yerushalayim, was the first ever event of this kind that these soldiers were treated to since the beginning of the war.
It was an inspiring evening, listening to the stories the soldiers had to say was incredibly humbling. We made sure to extend your warm wishes and look forward to staying in touch while providing them with the necessary equipment.
We would like to take the opportunity to stress again that when you donate to Shalem, 100% of your donation goes to those in need. All travel expenses and Shalem operations are paid privately to ensure your entire gift is given. The barbecue, too, was paid for privately.
Thank you, David, and you, our supporters
